The Brief

To replace a traditional Upvc conservatory, with a contemporary open planned kitchen/dining, garden room extension, more functional and in keeping with the Grade 2 Listed Building.

Our Approach

Our clients were keen to replace the Upvc conservatory at the rear south side of their house. Not only did they feel the conservatory was incongruous, but it was also difficult to moderate the temperature in the room, really hot in the Summer and extremely cold in the Winter and access was hampered where it was attached to the main property via a narrow doorway and awkward step up. Our clients wished to replace this with a seamless, open plan space, which would provide a great social living space for them to cook, relax and entertain their extended family and friends.

Taking into account the brief, our team, during a challenging pandemic lockdown, designed an extension that made use of traditional materials but used them in a contemporary manner. An externally expressed timber frame structure with masonry flank walls to blend with the existing house were used to create the new extension with the introduction of large composite timber/aluminium “Velfac” windows and rooflights maximised daylight and provided a real sense of airiness to the room.

Bi-parting doors positioned in the centre of the south elevation, worked particularly well creating a wide, easy open access to the outdoor area and long stretching back garden. ADP also designed the alterations to the garden with retaining walls and steps up to the lawned area.

A durable zinc sheet with standing seams was applied to the roof. This not only complemented the existing building and the new timber structure but also allowed for a very flat roof, meaning the extension sat comfortably under the windows of the main property.

Although more difficult to manage during a national lockdown, our team were on-hand to liaise with local builders, Roebuck and Holmes and client’s when required, to ensure the project was kept on track during challenging times.

The Result

A beautiful kitchen and dining/garden room, contemporary, yet traditional in style, which has a strong visual transition between the new and old, inside and outside and provides our clients with a large, open plan, sociable and more economical living space.
