Private Houses

The brief:

Small extension to ‘fill-in’ the corner of a previously ‘L’ shaped room to provide a larger kitchen dining room.

Our approach:

The three-storey townhouse had a ground floor ‘L’ shaped kitchen dining room, providing access to a small garden at the rear. The foot of the ‘L’ was largely glazed with a chamfered corner and formed the dining area. The roof of this areas also formed a balcony at first floor level accessed from a sitting/play room. The brief was to create a larger, more useable dining area in order to comfortably seat 8 people, and a larger kitchen to provide more work surface.

Our approach was to utilise a dark corner of the garden, which was largely unused, and incorporate this space into the kitchen, creating a large square shaped room. This former small garden area would now become extremely valuable internal living space. Rather than being lost, this small outdoor area was then replaced above with an extension to the existing balcony, which now spans the full width of the property making a very useable, private, peaceful outdoor space, overlooking the woodland.

We worked closely with KC Design House to create a stunning kitchen, incorporating a steel column into the design, which was a structural requirement but which also served to visually divide the two areas

The result:

“A room which has become much more than just a kitchen, it has provided a well-used family space and has transformed the way in which we use our home.”
