The Brief

Conversion of existing holiday let cottage and swimming pool annex to form one residential dwelling.

Our Approach

Our clients had previously secured a planning permission for conversion of the former barn, now holiday let and swimming pool, but weren’t inspired by the designs prepared. After a recommendation from a friend they approached ADP to see if we could come up with something that would be acceptable to the planners in this green belt location, but which would also give them a family home they could be proud of.

Our initial approach was to see how we could replace the existing inappropriate conservatory, which was somewhat alien to the former barn building. We chose to replace this with an extension of similar proportions cut with a ‘cat-slide’ roof, much more in-keeping with the barn character. The clients wanted a modern feel to the property and so aluminium framed windows and doors, with lots of glass allowed us to create this feel whilst the form of the building retained the agricultural feel. Ridge glazing and patent glazing were included to bring more light into the centre of the house. The clients wanted an open plan arrangement and liked the idea of interaction between the ground floor and first floor. Careful thought went into how to create the open plan arrangement but still define the spaces. The property provides a unique 4 bedroom family home.

ADP were subsequently appointed to design and secure planning permission for the garage/agricultural store and new access to the property.

The Result

A contemporary, functional family home for our clients to be proud of, forming the central hub of a successful development.
